Dear Neighbors,

The primary election will be critical as it will (among other things) determine the overall composition of the US Senate. There will also be four local ballot questions; ANY REGISTERED VOTER, REGARDLESS OF PARTY CAN VOTE ON THESE. The official 9th ward ballot appears on the reverse side, but here are our recommendations:

US SENATE–CONOR LAMB PA likely holds the key to control of the US Senate in 2022. The next US Senator from PA will cast the deciding votes on every piece of legislation on the Biden administration’s agenda, as well as on judicial nominees up to and possibly including the Supreme Court. We believe Conor Lamb has the electoral experience, energy, and integrity to defeat the forces that seek to take our country back to the dark ages. Over his four years as a Congressman, he has advocated for veterans’ services, women’s reproductive rights, raising the minimum wage, and expanding Medicare. As a sitting congressman, he stood up to the mob attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6th, and is a fierce proponent of accountability for those conspiring to overturn the results of the November 2020 election. Lamb has voted 100 percent in accordance with President’s Biden ambitious legislative agenda. Endorsed by groups ranging from PA NOW to Philly’s Black Clergy, Lamb will build bridges across the Commonwealth and give us the representation we all deserve.

PA GOVERNOR–JOSH SHAPIRO  Democrats have had to rely on the power of Gov. Wolf’s veto to strike down many of the most reactionary bills the GOP-controlled PA House and Senate have passed. Without the veto power of the governor, GOP bills restricting reproductive health rights, LGBTQ+ rights, access to the ballot, and even a teacher’s right to teach students without fear of prosecution could become the laws of our state. Josh Shapiro, who is running unopposed on the Democratic ticket, is eminently qualified to make sure this critical office remains in Democratic hands. Having served as a state rep, a county commissioner, and PA’s Attorney General, Josh has proven that he has the vision, progressive track record, and focus to move our Commonwealth forward in these very challenging times.

PA LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR–AUSTIN DAVIS, is a State Representative from Mon Valley in the Western part of our state and the chosen running mate of Josh Shapiro. The lieutenant governor oversees the parole board, presides over the PA Senate, and is a vital partner in assisting the governor in the day-to-day functions of the state. We heartily support the 9th Ward endorsement of Austin Davis as we think he will be an important complement and working partner for Josh Shapiro when he is elected governor.

US CONGRESS–DWIGHT EVANS  In his six years in office,Congressman Evanshas advocated for healthcare for children, seniors, and veterans; fought for tax fairness, civil rights, better housing, and the revitalization of our neighborhoods; and steadfastly upheld the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans and all citizens who struggle for visibility and representation. The 9th Ward strongly endorses the reelection of Rep. Dwight Evans to the US Congress.

PA SENATE — State Sen. Art Haywood has been a steadfast advocate for public education, raising the minimum wage, restricting access to guns, and fighting for solutions to the scourge of gun violence. He is running unopposed, but we strongly urge you to re-nominate him for another term.

PA STATE REPRESENTATIVE–PAM DeLISSIO has recently been redistricted into our part of the ward and we think her expertise as a State Representative for the past ten years in a Republican-controlled legislature has shown her effective leadership and advocacy. As one of her long-time constituents in Roxborough stated: “Pam has become known as a smart hard-working and effective legislator. She brings a pragmatic approach to solving problems – working with leaders of both parties and all levels of government to get things done. Pam stands out as the kind of legislator that we don’t have enough of in Harrisburg.” While our ward has voted to endorse her challenger, we believe that State Representative Pam DeLissio has already demonstrated her ability to get the job done well and so we are recommending that you support her re-election.

BALLOT QUESTIONS–VOTE “YES” ON ALL: 1) amending the Home Rule Charter to increase the number of mayoral appointees to the Zoning Board of Adjustment from five to seven; (2) amending the Charter to remove all gender-based references; (3) amending the Educational Supplement to the Charter to remove all gender-based references; (4) amending the Charter to establish the Fair Housing Commission as an independent commission.

DEMOCRATIC STATE COMMITTEE–Please support our fellow-committee people and neighbors, Nina Ahmad and Ahsan Nasratullah.
