Dear Neighbor:

The May 19th Democratic primary election represents an important step in ensuring that the republic envisioned by Ben Franklin and our Founders will end the threat posed by President Trump’s egregious abuses of power, restore governmental checks and balances, and break MAGA Republican control of the U.S. House and Senate. If you are concerned about the unauthorized war with Iran, skyrocketing gas prices, massive inflation, and masked ICE thugs seizing people off the streets with no judicial warrant, now is the time to get out and vote for Democrats who will fight back.

The May primary also represents an historic opportunity to make Pennsylvania a bulwark against Trump’s policies at the state level if Democrats take control of the State Senate and increase our razor-thin majority in the General Assembly.

The 9th Ward Democratic Committee endorses the following candidates in the May 19th Primary:

Governor: Josh Shapiro has delivered results and shown up for us in moments of crisis and emergency. Under his leadership Pennsylvania has invested more in public education than ever before, created new jobs, and put money back in people’s pockets.

Lieutenant Governor: Austin Davis has led efforts to assist communities with grants for violence intervention and prevention, as well as pushing for afterschool programs for young people and initiatives to fight gun violence.

U.S. Congress: In the primary to replace retiring Rep. Dwight Evans, the 9th Ward Democratic Committee has not made a formal endorsement.

State Senate: Art Haywood is a leading Democrat in the PA Senate and serves as the top Democrat on the Health and Human Services Committee, fighting for dignity for workers, families, and our communities. He has led weekly vigils protesting ICE raids; fought to increase the minimum wage; and pushed for action to address the climate crisis and protect a woman’s right to choose.

General Assembly (194th District): Tarik Khan has proven to be an effective legislator, passing bills to address affordable housing, medical debt cancellation, and safe staffing for nurses. He has also brought $60 million back to our community.

General Assembly (200th District): Christopher Johnson is running for the seat vacated by Rep. Chris Rabb. While this is his first run for public office, he has a strong background in state and federal government, having served as a regional office director for former U.S. Senator Bob Casey and for current General Assembly Speaker Joanna McClinton. Most recently, Chris has been fighting to increase funding for the Philadelphia school district.

Democratic State Committee: We recommend 9th Ward Committee Members Councilmember Nina Ahmad and Ahsan Nasratullah for reelection to the PA State Committee.

Ward Committee Persons: This May your 9th Ward Committee people are up for election. We therefore respectfully ask for your support for your local Ward Members.

Ballot Questions: We recommend a “Yes” vote on the ballot question creating a youth ombudsman and the question creating a Philadelphia Retirement Savings Board. For more information on these resolutions please visit our website (www.9thwarddems.org).

Sincerely,

Ninth Ward Committee
